The Artichoke Inn
The Artichoke Inn is a stunning pub that dates all the way back to the 12th century. This beautifully thatched building has been thoughtfully modernized over the years, but you can still feel the history in every corner, from the gorgeous exposed beams to the cozy, welcoming interior. The atmosphere is made even better by the friendly barmaids and cheerful locals who are always happy to chat.
We were impressed with the beer selection, so we settled on a West Coast IPA and a Twin Coast Pale Ale and headed for the beer garden. It's a perfect, sunny spot to relax, complete with a charming water feature and a wonderful old sign that truly captures the spirit of the pub.
P&P
Background....
12th Century (Local Tradition): The building is often said to have its origins in the 12th century, likely from the time of a monastery that once stood nearby. However, this is largely a local belief and lacks official documentation.
Late 17th Century (Official Records): This is the more commonly accepted and documented period for the building's construction. It was originally a single, large house.
18th & 19th Century (Transformation): Over these two centuries, the building was altered and divided. It began to be used as an inn, or public house. It became a central part of the community, serving not just as a place for a drink but also as a venue for public auctions, sales, and local meetings.
20th Century (Continued Use): The building continued to function as a public house, serving a rural community and evolving with the times.
Present Day: The Artichoke Inn is officially recognised by Historic England as a Grade II listed building, which protects it as a building of historical significance. While it has been remodeled, it still retains key historical features like traditional stonework, timber framing, and open fireplaces.
More than a Pub The Artichoke Inn has served multiple purposes throughout its history. It was once a single house that was later divided into separate buildings. In the 1800s, it served as an important community hub, hosting auctions, meetings, and even events for the local agricultural and mining community.
A Modern Day Gem Today, The Artichoke Inn is known for its traditional country pub atmosphere, with a comfortable interior and a pleasant beer garden. It's a popular spot for both locals and visitors exploring Dartmoor, and it's recognized by organizations like CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) for its quality.
