Bay Horse

You'll find the perfect blend of old-world charm and funky modern style. The interior is super cool, with a modern vibe that still celebrates that classic old pub feel.

But the real showstopper is their beautiful beer garden. It's the ideal spot to kick back and chill out. When it comes to drinks, they boast an excellent selection on tap. We were particularly impressed to find Theakston Traditional Mild, which is incredibly rare these days – a true treat for any beer lover. Alongside that, we enjoyed a crisp Pilsner Urquell. It's safe to say we were pleasantly surprised by the range and quality.

The friendly staff and the welcoming crowd create a fantastic atmosphere, and to top it all off, you can grab delicious toastie sandwiches right out the back in the garden.

Background....

Traditional real-ale pub with a rich history, though some specific details of its early establishment are a bit varied in available information

Grade II Listed Building: The Bay Horse Inn is a Grade II listed building, with its first listing date being March 16, 1978. This indicates its significant architectural or historic interest.

Established Date: While one source suggests it was established in the late 18th century, another states 15th century. The 15th-century claim is supported by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale), which describes it as a "Grade II listed 15th-century inn." This makes it one of the older establishments in Totnes.

Historical Mentions: Historical records show various landlords and events associated with the Bay Horse throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For instance, James Wills was a landlord who died in 1890, and there was a fire at the inn in 1898.

Evolution of Use: Over the centuries, the pub has been a "silent observer" to the evolution of Totnes from a bustling market town to a modern cultural hub.

Present Day:

Today, The Bay Horse is known as "the little pub with the big garden." It continues to be a community hub, offering:

Real Ales and Ciders: It has a reputation for an excellent selection of real ales, lagers, wines, and regional ciders, and is listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.

Live Music: The pub is a popular venue for live music, hosting regular jazz, folk sessions, open mics, and showcasing local talent.

Community Events: It's a place for lively chat, book clubs, poetry groups, and community fundraiser quiz nights.

Accommodation: The Bay Horse also offers two double en-suite B&B rooms and a studio apartment.

"BYO Food" policy: Uniquely, customers are welcome to bring their own food from nearby takeaways.

While the exact oldest pub in Totnes is generally cited as the Kingsbridge Inn (a 17th-century inn), the Bay Horse certainly holds its own as a historical and cherished establishment in the town.
