The Fox and Hounds
The first thing that strikes you is the beautiful, sturdy stone building, standing proudly on the edge of Dartmoor. It has a timeless quality that feels more like a classic Scottish lodge than something you’d expect in Devonshire.
Inside, it’s everything you could want from a traditional, old-school pub. The atmosphere is genuinely relaxed and we got a wonderfully warm welcome from the friendly staff behind the bar. There was a great selection of ales on tap, and we settled in with a perfectly kept pint of Jail Ale and a Timothy Taylor—both were excellent.
We even had time for a quick game of pool before heading out to the beer garden to soak up the peaceful surroundings. It’s a proper, quintessential Devon pub and a place we can’t wait to return to.

Background....
Family-Run History: The hotel has been under the same family management for over 50 years, giving it a strong local and familiar character.
Location and Purpose: It's situated directly within the Dartmoor National Park, a popular spot for walkers and day-trippers. A trackway behind the hotel provides direct access to the moors.
Evolution of Services: The establishment has evolved from a simple inn into a family-run hotel with a variety of offerings. It now includes not only hotel accommodation but also a restaurant, two bars, a games room, a beer garden, and a children's play area.
Community Hub: The hotel is a community hub, notable for having a skittle alley that can also be used as a function room for parties and events.
The View: Due to its location on the edge of Dartmoor, it is known for its views looking west towards Bodmin Moor and Cornwall, making it a great spot to watch the sunset.
While it may not have a long, documented history stretching back to the 16th century like some other local pubs, its reputation is built on its long-standing family ownership, its amenities, and its prime location for exploring the moors.
