The Kings Arms

Stepping into The King's Arms is like discovering a true piece of local history. As a traditional Grade II listed pub, it has a wonderfully authentic atmosphere, exactly what you hope to find in a classic Devon local.

We were immediately greeted by a friendly barman and a fantastic selection of drinks on tap. We settled in with a couple of excellent pints from the local Teignworthy Brewery—the 'Gun Dog' and the 'Thirsty Blonde' were both in perfect condition. The pub has a great community vibe, with a pool table for entertainment and a large screen showing the football, making it a perfect spot to relax.

But the biggest and most delightful surprise was found out back. Tucked away from the world is a beautifully peaceful and relaxing beer garden. It truly is a hidden oasis, offering a chilled and tranquil escape right in the middle of Buckfastleigh.

Overall, The King's Arms is a superb local pub that perfectly balances its historic charm with a friendly, welcoming vibe. It’s a definite gem

Background....

Established in the 17th century, The King's Arms has been a cornerstone of the Buckfastleigh community for centuries. Its history is deeply intertwined with the development of the town itself, serving as a central meeting point for locals and travellers to find rest and refreshment. For much of its life, it has been more than just a pub, acting as a crucial hub for town life and witnessing numerous local events.

Architectural Significance & Listed Status

The King's Arms is a Grade II Listed Building, a status it received on January 6, 1983. This designation recognizes its special architectural and historic interest.

According to Historic England, the current structure dates to the c. 1820s. It is a public house and hotel built in a distinctive double-depth plan. Key architectural features include:

Exterior: A symmetrical two-storey front with five bays, a slate roof concealed by a parapet, and a central stuccoed doorcase with elegant pilasters. The windows are early 19th-century 12-pane sashes.

Interior: The pub preserves much of its original joinery, including reeded doorcases and a notable "imperial" staircase with stick balusters that rises to a first-floor gallery.

A significant historical note is that the building to the right of the pub, which later became a National Westminster Bank, was originally the assembly rooms for the hotel, indicating its importance and scale in the 19th century.

Role in the Community

Positioned on Fore Street, the main thoroughfare of the historic market town, The King's Arms has always been at the heart of Buckfastleigh. As a key entry point to Dartmoor National Park and located near attractions like Buckfast Abbey and the South Devon Railway, the pub has long served both a strong local customer base and a steady stream of tourists.

Over the years, it has hosted numerous historical figures and events, cementing its place as an integral part of the town's heritage. In modern times, it continues to be a community hub, known for hosting events like live music and quiz nights.
