The Palk Arms
This is a classic village pub with a truly friendly welcome. We were greeted by great people and a welcoming barman, and it was great to see such a good local selection on tap.
We ordered a Teginworthy Gundog and a Devon Dumpling and headed to the tables out the back. From our seats, we were met with the most stunning views over the moors. It’s truly a fantastic spot to relax and chill out.
The beer garden is excellent too.
We also learned that this cosy pub is steeped in history, having been a popular hangout for American G.I.'s during the Second World War. To find out more, be sure to check out our website page for the Palk Arms.

Background....
A Glimpse into the Past
The Palk Arms is a historic pub with a deep-rooted history, believed to date back to the 16th century. Situated in the heart of Hennock, a village nestled on the edge of the Teign Valley, it has long been a fixture of the community. Records from as far back as the mid-1600s mention alcohol being sold in the village, and the Palk Arms is the direct descendant of that long tradition.
The Heart of the Village
For centuries, the pub has been far more than just a place to get a drink. In the early 1900s, it served as a true community hub, selling essential goods like petrol, cigarettes, and even fly-fishing hooks. It was a lively gathering place for villagers, hosting music and dancing on Saturday nights and serving as a central meeting spot for locals after a day’s work.
A WWII Landmark
One of the most unique and well-known parts of the pub’s history is its connection to the Second World War. The Palk Arms became a popular hangout for American G.I.'s who were billeted in the surrounding area. There are local stories about many a lively evening, with the American soldiers reportedly supplying the landlord with bourbon.
The Pub Today
While the building has undergone some changes over the years, it has always remained a proper Devon pub. Under its current management, which took over in 2017, the Palk Arms continues its tradition of being a warm, welcoming space. It honors its history while providing a cozy spot for both locals and visitors to enjoy a selection of local ales and a friendly atmosphere.
