Background...

The Peter Tavy Inn, located in the charming village of Peter Tavy on the western edge of Dartmoor, boasts a long and intriguing history.

Early Origins:
It's generally believed that the building was originally constructed in the 14th or 15th century to house the stonemasons who were rebuilding the nearby Church of St. Peter. At this time, it was likely a single-story, thatched dwelling divided into two rooms.

Some sources suggest it may have initially been a farm cottage and blacksmith's shop.

Evolution into an Inn:
After the stonemasons left, the building's use is unclear for a period, but it was eventually expanded with an additional story, fireplaces, and chimneys.

By 1819, the building was definitively operating as an inn. A sale catalogue from that year describes it as having a kitchen, bar, parlor, three lodging rooms, and a stable.
Later Centuries and Notable Connections:

The inn underwent further extensions and alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries.

An intriguing local story suggests that Frank "Axeman" Mitchell, a famous escapee from Princetown Prison (the only one to escape without recapture), may have visited or even stayed at the inn around 1965, with his bills reportedly paid by one of the notorious Kray twins.

The Peter Tavy Inn is a Grade II listed building, recognized for its special architectural or historic interest. Its original features include a 3-light granite mullion window on the ground floor and a chamfered granite doorway with a segmental arch.

Today, the Peter Tavy Inn remains a popular establishment, known for its good food, real ales, and its welcoming atmosphere to walkers, cyclists, and families exploring Dartmoor.
