Truly beautiful setting, situated right on the picturesque banks of the River Exe. From the moment you approach, you can feel the pub's incredible history and sense the countless stories held within its old walls.

Stepping inside is a delight. The decor masterfully blends the classic charm of an old, characterful pub with fresh, modern touches. We loved the mix of traditional features highlighted by unique details like the vintage telephone on the wall, brought to life with colourful, glowing lights – such a cool and memorable feature.

The barman was genuinely friendly and took a real interest in our day, chatting with us about the other pubs we had visited. He talked us through the excellent selection on tap, and we both decided on a perfectly poured pint of Ghost Ship.

With our drinks in hand, we walked through the lovely, inviting dining area and stepped out onto the front beer garden terrace. The terrace overlooks the beautiful River Exe, making it the absolute perfect place to relax and watch the world go by. It’s ideal for watching kayakers, and walkers pass by, creating a chilled and wonderfully relaxing atmosphere.

It was a truly brilliant pub experience from start to finish. If you're looking for history, character, great service, and a stunning view in Exeter, you simply have to visit the Port Royal

The Port Royal

Background....

Nestled on the banks of the River Exe, the Port Royal pub stands as a testament to Exeter's rich and varied history. With records stretching back to the mid-19th century, this beloved local institution has witnessed significant changes to the city's quayside and has a fascinating story of its own, intertwined with maritime trade, sporting heritage, and the everyday lives of Exonians.

Early Origins and a Nod to Maritime History:

The first confirmed record of the Port Royal pub dates back to 1844. However, the building itself is believed to be much older, incorporating a former quayside warehouse and a row of cottages once inhabited by canal workers. This architectural heritage speaks to the pub's deep connection with the bustling commercial activity that once defined Exeter's waterfront. The name "Port Royal" itself is a likely reference to the historic and infamous Port Royal in Jamaica, a key trading hub in the 17th century, suggesting a conscious link to a wider world of maritime trade and adventure.

A Long-Standing Connection with Rowing:

For a significant period, the Port Royal was synonymous with the Exeter Rowing Club. The club, established in the mid-19th century, had its headquarters at the pub for many years. The old boathouse, which is now the pub's restaurant, was a central hub for the city's rowing community, witnessing countless crews preparing to take to the waters of the Exe. This historic association firmly places the Port Royal at the heart of Exeter's sporting and social life in the Victorian era and beyond.

Notable Landlords and Curious Occurrences:

Throughout its long history, the Port Royal has been under the stewardship of numerous landlords, some of whom have left a lasting mark. One particularly notable publican was Charles Edwards, who reportedly ran the establishment for an impressive 66 years, from 1857 until his death in 1923 at the age of 93.

The pub's past is also peppered with intriguing anecdotes. One such tale recounts a whirlwind in 1850 that is said to have lifted a four-oared gig from the river and spun it in the air, much to the astonishment of the pub's patrons.

The Evolving Quayside and a Constant Presence:

The Port Royal has stood as a constant presence through the transformation of the Exeter Quayside. From a bustling port central to the city's woollen cloth trade to a more leisurely and recreational space, the pub has adapted and endured. Today, it remains a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, offering a glimpse into Exeter's vibrant past while continuing to serve as a welcoming hub for the community. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its rich history, character, and prime location on the picturesque banks of the River Exe.
