From Historic Inn to Cyclist's Haven: The Story of the Pump & Pedal at Prewley Hub

The Pump & Pedal at Prewley Hub, a now-popular destination for cyclists and walkers on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, boasts a history that stretches back further than its modern, cycle-focused exterior might suggest. Before it was a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, the site was home to the Prewley Moor Inn, a building with roots in the 17th century.

Originally, the structure consisted of two 17th-century cottages. These were later combined and transformed into an inn. For many years, the Prewley Moor Inn served as a local landmark and a watering hole for residents and travellers in the Sourton area of Okehampton.

In a significant transformation, the former inn was redeveloped into what is now known as the Prewley Hub. This new chapter for the historic site saw the establishment of the Pump & Pedal in October 2019. The new venture embraced its prime location on the Devon Coast to Coast (National Cycle Network Route 27) and the West Devon Way, creating a dual-purpose establishment that caters specifically to the cycling community and other outdoor adventurers.

The Pump & Pedal uniquely combines a café and bar with a comprehensive bicycle workshop. This allows visitors to refuel with locally sourced food and drink while also having access to professional bike repairs and servicing.

While the Pump & Pedal is a recent addition, the name "Prewley" has a longer history in the area, notably associated with the nearby Prewley Water Treatment Works. This facility has been a crucial part of the region's infrastructure since its opening in 1952, responsible for supplying water to a large part of North Devon. It draws water from the West Okement River and the Meldon Reservoir. However, the Pump & Pedal's direct history lies not with the waterworks but with the legacy of the old Prewley Moor Inn, which has been reimagined to serve a new generation of visitors exploring the natural beauty of Dartmoor.
