Samuel Jones Smoke & Alehouse
This fantastic pub is a beautifully converted 19th-century warehouse that perfectly blends historical charm with a modern, industrial-chic design. The moment you step inside, you're greeted by a trendy, vibrant space that makes you feel right at home. One of the most unique details is the tap system, where the pumps are cleverly disguised as the beer labels on boxes behind the bar, adding to the distinctive, stylish decor.
Excellent selection of beers on tap—including the delicious Monterey Pale Ale and a Harbour Big Wednesday—we headed to the truly stunning terrace. It was a beautiful, sunny day, and the terrace was the perfect setting, offering amazing views that overlook the River Exe. Sitting there was pure bliss, a wonderfully peaceful escape from the everyday hustle and bustle.
The pub is clearly a popular spot, and it's easy to see why. Not only is the atmosphere fantastic, but the food looked absolutely amazing, too. With a friendly and welcoming bartender to top it all off, it’s an all-around great place to relax, enjoy a good meal, and take in the stunning views.
P&P
Background....
The Original Building: The warehouse was commissioned in 1878 by Samuel Jones, a prominent Exeter wine merchant, who also served as a Justice of the Peace, Alderman, and Mayor of the city. He intended for the building to eventually revert to city ownership, as part of his legacy to the people of Exeter.
A Building of Many Lives: Before becoming the pub it is today, the site had been a Devonshire Cider Company facility, a marine store, and a rag depot. In its early days, the warehouse was used for storing wines and spirits. The inauguration of the building was a significant event in Exeter, with a feast for the mayor and city officials.
The Transition: The building went on to house other businesses over the years and had a stint as a nightclub in the late 20th and early 21st century, known as "Tiffany's and Mambo."
The Modern Pub: In 2014, St Austell Brewery invested £1.5 million to transform the derelict warehouse into the Samuel Jones Smoke & Ale House. They kept the historic name to honor Samuel Jones and his original vision for the building. The new establishment was designed as a modern pub and restaurant with a focus on craft beers and a smokehouse-inspired menu. The brewery also converted the upper floor of the building into residential flats.
Honoring the Legacy: The family of Samuel Jones, including his great-granddaughter, were invited to the pub's official launch, which further connected the new venture to its historical roots.
