The Albert Inn Bridgetown Brewery
Stepping into this proper old pub is like taking a delightful trip back in time! Inside, you'll find a beautiful,
genuinely old-world interior complete with a charming lounge bar and a classic long, narrow layout that just oozes character.
But the charm doesn't stop there. Head outside and discover their lovely beer garden, perfect for soaking up the atmosphere. What truly sets this place apart is the on-site brewery! How cool is it that they make their own ale right there. We even had the pleasure of meeting the passionate brewer who's been crafting their delicious ales for an impressive 15 years.
You'll find a great selection of their own ales on tap, alongside other excellent choices like the Mahou and Cheeky Blonde we enjoyed. The friendly landlord and staff are incredibly welcoming and truly know their beers, always happy to share their expertise. It's clear they love what they do, and that makes for a fantastic experience. This is a must-visit for any real ale enthusiast or anyone looking for a truly authentic pub experience.
We will be returning to sample their delicious menu the food looked excellent.

Background....
The Albert Inn, located in Bridgetown, Totnes, has a rich history that dates back nearly 200 years, with the pub building itself being over 300 years old and originally two drover's cottages. While the pub is a long-established fixture in the area, the Bridgetown Brewery within its outbuildings is a more recent addition.
Key points about the history of Bridgetown Brewery:
Established: Bridgetown Brewery began brewing in 2008 in the outbuildings of The Albert Inn.
Independent: Although located at the pub, the brewery operates as an independent business.
Founder/Master Brewer: Giles Hawkins, the licensee of The Albert Inn, is the master brewer who started the Bridgetown Brewery. He learned to brew after taking over the pub, purchasing second-hand brewing vessels and developing his skills.
Brewing Capacity: It started with a two-barrel plant and has seen steady growth.
Beers: The brewery produces a range of regular beers, including "Albert Ale" (their best-seller), "Bridgetown Bitter," "West Coast IPA," and "Shark Island Stout," along with a growing selection of seasonal brews.
Exclusivity: For a time, to taste Bridgetown Brewery beers, you had to visit The Albert Inn, making it the brewery tap.
Apprentice Success: Giles Hawkins notably took on a young apprentice, George Langabeer, who started at 15 and has become a "beer brewing legend" at the pub.
Recognition: The Albert Inn, with its on-site brewery, has been recognized, including being named South Devon CAMRA Pub of the Year 2025.
The Albert Inn itself is a traditional pub known for its character and has been nicknamed the "Einstein" due to the intellectual calibre of its customers, as well as an inn sign featuring Albert Einstein. It's a "proper old-fashioned pub" that has resisted trends, focusing on a no-nonsense, friendly environment, and is a thriving
community hub.
